Embrace

5 ft x 23 in diameter

EMBRACE is a life-size, 2000lbs outdoor sculpture. It was commissioned by the University Health Foundation to honor their late obstetrician, Dr. Aziz. I distilled the family-themed client brief to its smallest unit: a mother and child. This piece utilizes local and international stone to connect the community to the world. The gilded vortices in the sculpture represent an umbilical connection – or “public belly buttons” – that link patients to staff, staff to the hospital, and art to the community.

The sculpture is a calming, one-of-a-kind focal point that promotes contemplation and can be enjoyed year-round on the 10th-floor roof garden of the UHS hospital Sky Tower in San Antonio, TX.
