The Evanston Art Center (EAC) is excited to present a new exhibition, Partition in the Modern World: Transdiasporic Art Perspectives, curated by 2022 / 2023 Curatorial Fellow, Pritika Chowdhry.

A partition is a change of political borders cutting through at least one territory, often dividing a homeland and fracturing communities along religious, ethnic, or other political lines. The 20th century saw over 25 countries partitioned worldwide, causing bloodshed, ethnic violence, and forced migrations of large segments of populations across the globe.

Partition in the Modern World: Transdiasporic Art Perspectives engages eleven different geopolitical partitions: the partitions of Palestine (1947, 1967, ongoing), Bosnia (1992), Cyprus (1974), Ireland (1921), Germany (1945), Mexico (1848), Native North America (1830-1850), India (1947), Pakistan/Bangladesh (1971), and Kashmir (1947, 1962, 1965).

The artists in this exhibition poetically probe the geopolitical phenomenon of partitioning a country and its aftermath through the dual lenses of cultural memories and multiple diasporic locations, laying bare the reverberations of partitions individually, locally, and globally. Examining, questioning, and protesting these partitions in the registers of human rights, political actors, and gendered fallout, the works engage partition as a political tool and its relevance now, in post-9/11 America and globally.

THE MEMENTO UNIVERSI

The memento universi© is of my own invention and one of the signature trademarks of my artwork. A star constellation frequently features in my titles and the works themselves. I invented this "memento universi©" to reference art history,  personal and cultural philosophies. Unlike the traditional memento mori, a reminder of life's transient nature used by artists throughout history, my memento universi© is a life-affirming encouragement to look beyond the surface and find balance in life - with all its contrasts and shimmering nuances.

Sabine Senft

ART EXPERIENCE

"My art works on three levels. Firstly the pieces are a visual experience: the play of proportions, shades and shapes along with textures combined to a balanced, harmonious composition that hopefully caught your eye. Then there is what I call the visceral experience: where one feels the balance of the composition, where one experiences the luminosity, color and shapes on a deeper level, where the light and glow of polish or gold leaf resonate within one. Finally there is  the cognitive experience: the contemplation of shapes and colors, the discovery and interpretation of details, like the memento universi* and suggested forms that invite the viewer to enter the piece, experience it and interact with it, thus connecting the circle to the visual and visceral aspects of my art where the beholder started out from."

SABINE SENFT

*the memento universi is part of my personal philosophy and my invention, more on this to follow

LUMINESSENCE — LIGHT reveals what is underneath, the ESSENCE.

LUMINESSENCE= LIGHT & ESSENCE

LIGHT reveals what is underneath, the ESSENCE.

In my work I explore contrasts.  As one kind and very observing reviewer once put it, my art consists of “… an element of structure within a certain free play. Shiny-dull, rough-smooth, warm-cool, hard-soft, linear-flowing. Juxtapositions of disparate elements […] seem to speak powerfully”.

Contrasts call our attention, focus our gaze and mind on a detail and bring us into the presence of the work of art. The contrast that caught the eye will become a gateway  for the onlooker to explore the rest of the piece close up with the eye being guided by a strong composition, from juxtaposition to juxtaposition, while sensing the underlying stability and balance.

The process of getting to the ESSENCE of things  is conveyed in my art through a multilayered process of revealing colors and textures buried beneath the surface. My pictures and sculptures allow and invite you to look below the surface –  literally and metaphorically.

A combination of additive and subtractive processes lead often  to an archaic quality in the appearance of my work. The incisions in my paintings reveal an abstract mixed media painting in its own right, onto which a fragile gold leaf composition is superimposed skin-like. At times several layers and formats of gold leaf are required to achieve the desired effect.

My body of work acts on more levels than is immediately apparent:

To me gold leaf is like skin on a person: it covers the being. On a visual level gold leaf covers my abstract paintings; we cannot look at the underlying colorful composition directly, just like we cannot see a person’s character from looking at their skin or appearance. We have to go deeper to see their ESSENCE.

And as we might do with a person who we get to know better after looking beyond the appearances, we may continue to analyze and interpret my pieces on a cognitive level; put a mental label on shapes, textures, patterns, colors or discover the memento universi ©. By seeing how they are all connected we are invited to experience the energetic flow and depth of the artwork on a visceral level. Visually, we are still perceiving a skin of gold leaf – but we can now recognize from a visceral experience what lies underneath…Go deep and enjoy!
